As Ivy was setting up the music room for the afternoon, Piper poked her head in the doorway.

Fidgeting with a short curl, Piper asked, “Do you have time to talk about your idea to transform the airfield into a park?”

“Sure.” Ivy placed a stack of cocktail napkins on the serving table. She was intrigued by Piper’s question, and the younger woman seemed excited. “I wouldn’t mind a second cup of coffee. Let’s go into the dining room.” Ivy kept coffee there for guests throughout the day.

“How was your lunch at the Coral Cafe?”

“Delicious. Gayle and most of the others stayed in the village.”

After they settled at a table covered in a blue-checked tablecloth, Piper began, “I’ve been thinking about our conversation by the firepit. My dream has been to find a project that I could manage. I love San Francisco, but I really love the beach and the slower pace of small towns.” She paused. “I’m thinking of staying here.”

“Summer Beach is a wonderful community, but it’s very different from a big city.” Stirring vanilla creamer into her coffee, Ivy smiled at Piper’s enthusiasm. “People are interested in everyone else’s business. Could you deal with that?”

“I wouldn’t mind. Even though everyone knows my family, I often feel lost in the city. People want more—more money, faster cars, bigger houses. I want to make a difference in people’s lives. Does that sound crazy?”

“Not at all. And you think you could do it here?” Ivy imagined Noah had something to do this, too. In a positive way, she hoped.

“I’m pretty sure of it. I believe I landed on that airstrip for a reason.”

“Noah?”

Piper nodded, and her cheeks colored slightly. “More than that, though. You’re an artist; can you tell me what you would envision for that land?”

Ivy closed her eyes. “I can just imagine it in my mind, and I can see people in the community involved in it, too.” She opened her eyes and told Piper about the two women she’d seen pushing strollers. “Older children could use a place to skate and ride their bikes. You’d want a variety of uses for people of different ages. Like a community garden, for example. Shelly could oversee that.”

Piper pulled out her phone and began tapping notes on it. “Keep talking. I want to get this down.”

As Ivy sipped her coffee, she painted a vision for Piper. “I’m not an architect, but I know what people like to do. Maybe you’d like to speak to Shelly and Poppy, and others in Summer Beach.”

“I sure will.” Piper seemed electrified over the idea.

“There’s just one problem.” Ivy leaned across the table. “You’d have to get the zoning changed for this.”

“Could you help with that?”

Ivy shook her head. “It took a natural disaster for me to get the zoning on this old house changed to allow me to run an inn. Even if Bennett supports this, you’ll need the city council’s approval. I had a very hard time convincing a couple of old-timers on the council. I don’t think they like out-of-towners.
